The Erasmus University Rotterdam has been in existence since 1973. Its history, however, dates back to 1913, the year in which the Netherlands School of Commerce was established through private initiatives with broad support from the Rotterdam business community. Erasmus University Rotterdam has bundled its education and research into three domains, in which the university enjoys international recognition.
Philipps-Universität it is also the oldest university in the world that was founded 1527 as a Protestant institution. It has been a place of research and teaching for nearly five centuries. Nowadays there are nearly 20,000 students studying in Marburg - 12 percent from all over the world. Almost all scientific disciplines, with the exception of the engineering sciences, are represented at Philipps-Universität Marburg.
Dresden University of Technology (Technische Universität Dresden, TUD) is one of the oldest technical universities in Germany and is justifiably proud of its fine tradition in education. Its buildings and institutes, just south of the city centre, cover approximately 275 hectares and form an integral part of Dresden.
The University of Silesia was established in Katowice in 1968 as the ninth university in Poland and is an autonomous state university. The University has its origins in the Higher School of Education, which was founded in 1928 - at that time it was the only institution of higher education in the region. Later, the school became a branch of the Jagiellońian University in Kraków, the oldest Polish University.
